Mapping Public Textile Art
Public art is a vibrant and essential field, enlivening our public spaces and people’s everyday lives. When textile and fibre art emerged in Australia in the mid-1960s, collaborations between artists and architects were influential in the emergence and professionalisation of the media.
Today public artworks made from textile and fibre abound, however their positions predominantly within buildings means they lack the visibility of works located outside. Where large-scale sculptures are often glimpsed by chance, textile and fibre works are often harder to locate.
This mapping project seeks to increase the visibility of these works, providing information to the public on the locations and details on the works and artists. Use the dropdown menu in the header to select which State or Territory you would like to explore.
This is an evolving project, works are being added as information is received.
Do you know the location of a public work of textile and fibre art?
Email the details to breedimattina@gmail.com so the work can be added to the list.
